Introduction[ | ]

Small Village with Crops

Farms will be crucial to any settlement.

Agriculture will be an integral part of any kingdom in Elyria, supporting cities, armies and economies through goods collected from the land. Food, honey, medicine, and crafting material will be used by every tribe to a varying degree. A kingdom's population limits depende largely on its ability to acquire food through self sufficient means like farming and hunting or through trade.[1]

Tribes and Farming[ | ]

The Neran and To'resk tribes will have the most advanced knowledge and in skills in agriculture due to their geographical locations and socio economic needs. The Neran will have access to many different biomes and will be able to cultivate a variety of different crops. The To'Resk in their wet land regions specialize in aqua-culture and aqua farming having "learned to capitalize on the diversity found in their biome by utilizing fully-submerged, partially-submerged, and fully-emergent land to create either farmable land plots or wetland plots for aquaculture and aqua-farming" [2][3].

Biomes & Soil Types[ | ]

Different biomes across Elyria will have unique soil types which will dictate what is best grown in those regions. The pH, composition of organic material, level of humidity and temperature will all affect specific crops in different ways. Some regions will allow certain crops to flourish while other might be inhospitable. Soil fertility can also be manipulated by mann to increase crop yields or to adapt crops to regions that they might otherwise struggle likely through the use of Alchemy. [4]

---Lower Montane: The lower montane is a higher elevation with cooler temperatures. It has warm, dry summers and cool wet winters. It has slightly acidic soils so it works best with fruits, vegetables, and grains that do better in slightly acidic soil.

---Mixed Leaf forests: is a transitional biome that typically lies between a deciduous and coniferous forest, or between a coniferous forest and warmer steppe biomes. Mixed Leaf forests do better with fruits and vegetables that require less light, less acidity, and similar weather patterns to the lower montane steppes. They are common location to grow roots, mushrooms, nuts, and honey, as well as tree fruits such as apples. The Mixed Leaf can be thought of as ideal biome for orchards and vineyards as well.

---Grasslands: The grasslands have the least acidity in the soil, and so are a great place for fruits, vegetables, and grains that require a higher alkalinity. They do well with corn, wheat - really any stalk-based vegetable, fruit and nut orchards, and plants that require more light. It's good for watermelon, and cantaloupe, strawberries, and other moss-like, ground-cover fruits. The open plains of the grasslands also make a great food source for many forms of grazing animals. So grasslands are among the most popular for raising cattle. Cows, horses, etc.(edited) Continued....
